A cryptogram is a secret message. It uses a code. Crypto means secret. Gram means written. So a cryptogram is a written secret, a code.

Each letter in the message represents a letter in the alphabet. You have to figure out the code. The words are separated by spaces.

For example, read the cryptogram below. It is a common saying when people get upset.

B F R P J G D J      P C       F      K P N R Z J .

Start with single letters. What could  F represent? How many words have only one letter?

Capital I,  a
The word "I" doesn't look righ there, so try F= a .  Look for other F's. If you are right, those will be the letter "a" also.

_ a_ _ _ _ _ _     _ _    a     _ _ _ _ _ _.

Now go to the other short words. How many two-letter words can you think of that come before "a?"

is a;  to a; be a; on a; in a

Since the sentence has only one word before the two spaces ( _ _ a),  the word might be IS. Try "IS A."  That would mean P = i and C = s

_ a_ i _ _ _ _     is    a     _ i _ _ _ _.

Continue trying to figure out what each one can be. Try making different combinations. Some may work and some may not. Think of common endings and beginnings for words and try them.

Working with someone else makes this more fun!

Here is your cryptogram for this unit. (4 words) It is a definition from this unit.

R H S W D   P X   R H   W U F N P F H .

Have you decoded the message?
